Today’s “Best Song Ever”: New Edition “Cool It Now”

A look at the video for New Edition’s “Cool It Down” is a strange experience. These kids look a little bit badass, in an 80′s way, but they sound like weird effeminate robot kids. The song itself is expertly crafted. It will literally cool you down. If you have a warm can of Coca-Cola and you put it next to the speakers playing this song it will turn out cool. It’s just that great.

In fact, it is so good that it makes the Velvet Underground’s “Cool It Down” into the second best song where you are implored to “Cool It.” These kids might have turned into has-beens, drug addicts and whatever else, but they really got it right here. Maybe it was worth it.

Today’s “Best Song Ever”: Mastodon “Sea Beast”

After about 1992 and prior to the aughts I mostly avoided heavy-metal. It was meathead music for people who wanted to call me homophobic things because I loved Yo La Tengo. I did not need that shit. At some point though, the smart folks in the metal kingdom began to take the genre back and I could appreciate the blown out structures and loopy subject matter of the music.

Mastodon’s Leviathan was the record that made all of this true. I am sure I was not alone in being brought back by these guys. The band was(and remains) across the board an exemplary example of their chosen musical mode. Classical in many ways but forward looking in others. Smart as hell but applying those brains to the dumb and brutish world of metal, they made an album about Moby Dick.

“Sea Beast” is a stand out but the album is really all standouts. Each song is a monster collection of riffs with the sort of songwriting chops that many of us do not ask of our heavy music. If you haven’t already given Leviathan a listen get on that.
