Today’s “Best Song Ever”: The Louvin Brothers “The Kneeling Drunkards Plea”

By Tim Duffy

We have all been there once or twice. Maybe we are not all religious folks, but if you have ever been taught to pray and have made your way to adulthood it is likely you have begged a God(whatever your version of he/she/it may be) for forgiveness while projectile vomiting into a porcelain altar. We are adults and we need to be saved from ourselves sometimes.

This song by country duo the Louvin Brothers makes these laments into a morality tale. These drunkards (who could be you or I, but more likely have far worse drinking problems I tell myself) need some divine intervention and they are not being shy about it. The ditty opens with a wide eyed church organ that leads into the song’s even pace and beautiful harmonies that only a pair of southern fried brothers could attempt.

“Lord have mercy on me was the kneeling drunkard’s plea/and as he knelt their on the ground I know that God from heaven looked down.” The drunk in question has been through hell in this song arriving late to mothers’ death bed he finds himself “resting next to her” within two years of her demise. It is not exactly a happy conclusion but these God fearing folk turn it into a case of heavenly deliverance.
