I don’t know what the now defunct band The Mae Shi are doing now. I could look it up sure but I do not particularly care to. I assume they started another band and sort of recall hearing something to that affect. I don’t recall being that interested, even then. In fact, I cannot really recall ever caring much about The Mae Shi. I saw them once and enjoyed their record somewhat. The one exception, the one time I really cared about them at all was the four minute and change run time of “Run To Your Grave”, a song as good as any in indie rock in the last decade or so.
Recording one of the best songs ever can be a curse for some bands, and in my personal opinion (even though many people likely missed this one) that happened to The Mae Shi. Of course breaking up right after your biggest success means that no one will ever really know, but really I feel like I do on this one. That said, the catchy shout along on this classic is joyful and infectious. I listen and think to myself it should have been monstrously popular. At least then they could have had a Peter Bjorn and John sized payday.
