Today’s “Best Song Ever”: Women “Drag Open”

By Tim Duffy

Last night one of the most interesting young guitarists, Christopher Reimer, in one of the most interesting young guitar bands, Women, on the planet died in his sleep at the age of 26. This is a particularly sad death for anyone interested in rock music that was both married to the old tools(guitar, bass, drums) but also hoped the genre could expand beyond nostalgic looks back at previous glories.

Much of the aughts in guitar rock have seemed dedicated to retreads of forgotten eras. From the lo-fi 90′s to the garage rock 60′s and everything in between. Women seemed committed to expanding the language of guitar rock with striking interplay and exciting song structure. The corresponding guitar lines of many of their songs, including today’s “Best Song Ever” “Drag Open,” made them one of the most exciting bands currently brewing on the margins.

“Drag Open” takes the clamor and noise of No Wave and combines it with an innate sense of melody that makes it appealing to anyone who has ever appreciated some unique guitar feedback or the way a chord sounded when run through the right amp.

A memorial website has been set up here in Christopher Reimer’s honor.
